How does Chiropractic work?
So how does chiropractic work? Well, chiropractors assess your spine and pelvis to make sure the bones are in their proper position or as chiropractors call it, "aligned." Chiropractors check the alignment of your spine and pelvis because they house and protect an important part of your nerve system, the spinal cord. Your nerve system is made up of your brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and 95-100 billion neurons. Sounds kind of important, right?
Well it is! Your nerve system is in control of how your body operates. The brain coordinates everything in the body - organ functions, muscular movements, breathing, heart rate, body temperature, sleep cycles, release of hormones and the list goes on and on. Your spinal cord, located inside your spine and pelvis, is the pathway for the signals that go back and forth from your brain and body. Your peripheral nerves carry the information from your spinal cord to your entire body from the top of your head to the bottom of your toes. The neurons are cells that send signals at lightning fast speed from cell to cell in order to carry out the brain's request. This is pretty important considering everything in your body is made up of cells!
So again, how does chiropractic work? Well, when a chiropractor checks your spinal alignment, she/he is assessing the movement of the vertebras and seeing if they are subluxated. A subluxation is when a vertebra becomes fixated in a misaligned position. This causes decreased nerve function because the nerves are irritated by the improper position of the vertebra. Therefore, all of the organs, muscles, tissues and cells that receive information from those nerves have decreased function as well. For example: In your thoracic spine, the nerves that exit at your T3 vertebral level innervate (supply power to!) your heart and lungs. If this vertebra is subluxated then there will be decreased nerve flow (less power!) to the heart and lungs which may cause dysfunction.
As a Fredericksburg Chiropractor, Dr. JP detects a subluxated vertebra and uses his hands to deliver a very specific adjustment. The chiropractic adjustment aligns the vertebra, restoring motion as well as optimal nerve function, which then restores increased function to the organs, tissues and cells (Power On!).
